Tape three unsharpened pencils at the top of the bottle so that it can stand inverted. The sticks should go over the bottle cap.

Check if the bottle is able to stand on its own with the pencils. Adjust if necessary.

Check if the cork is a good fit for the bottle. Use tape, if necessary, to make it fit better.

Decorate the rocket – cut and put on fins or give it a name. The sky’s the limit!

Step outside to an open area and pour the vinegar into the bottle using the funnel.

Place the baking soda on half a sheet of paper towel.

Wrap the baking soda in the paper towel. *This is a safety measure so the reaction would be slowed and allow for scientist to step away into safety

Push the paper towel into the bottle and cork it. *Do not cork the bottle too tightly as this will prevent blast off

Quickly turn the bottle over, take a quick step back and count down until blast off!

Congratulations, you’ve just built your own homemade rocket!

When baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and vinegar (diluted acetic acid) are mixed together, it triggers a two-step reaction that creates carbon dioxide. The cork prevents the carbon dioxide gas from escaping the rocket, allowing the air pressure to build up to a point where it pushes out the cork and propels the rocket up into the air!

250ml of vinegar
One sheet of paper towel
Two tablespoons of baking soda
Three unsharpened pencils
A 1l bottle (clean and empty)
A cork (this should fit the mouth of the bottle nicely)
A roll of tape
A pair of scissors
A funnel
Coloured paper and other decorative materials
